Pipe Groove Weld Positions
Below is a description of each weld position on pipe material. These positions seem to be the hardest and normally will qualify you in a wider range. Just like for Fillet Welds and on plate Groove Welds each position normally will qualify you to weld in different orientations based off from the different codes you are welding too. For instance if you perform a flat 1G weld on pipe under ASME 2010 Section IX and qualify according to the testing procedures in the code then you are qualified for the flat position on pipe, plate and fillet welds. Lets say you then perform a 6G position weld under ASME 2010 Section IX and qualify according to the testing procedures in the code then you are qualified for all positions in pipe, plate and fillet welds. So there can be great benefit and cost savings if you can perform a pipe weld in the 6G position.
